ABOUT STUART J PEARCE

I have worked in the advertising industry as a designer, illustrator and marketer for more than 30 years and was trained at Plymouth College of Art and Design. I work in private studios in the beautiful village of Broadway, in Worcestershire.

My painting practice is based primarily in portraiture and in seeking to produce work that resonates with realism, combines interesting marks, textures, and colour and offers something unique that in this world of the ubiquitous 'selfie', that photography cannot.

PORTRAIT ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2020

I was selected for Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year Competition in 2020 and appeared in Episode 6, Series 7.

I painted Paul Mescal, the Irish actor who is best known for his starring role in Normal People (2020), which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

This timelapse provides a glimpse into my painting process and a finished image of the portrait is shown below, along with other stills from the day's filming.

PORTRAIT OF PAUL MESCAL

This is the finished painting of Paul Mescal. It was created in a little under four hours during the filming of Sky Portrait Artist of the Year and then further work was carried out in my studio at a later date to fine-tune the finished image.

Paul was a great sitter and it was a pleasure to be able to paint him from life when so much of my work is often created with the aid of photography.

It was a fantastic experience to be part of this fantastic show and to meet the crew, judges and spend time with the other artists.
